Confused About Food Labeling? Wondering What All the Fuss is About And Why You Should Care?

GMOs (or “genetically modified organisms”) are plants that have been manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. The whole purpose of creating GMOs is so the plant can withstand drought, pests, and direct application of herbicide. Let’s face it…the food manufacturers in this county ARE NOT in business to lose money and making sure the crops required to manufacture all those yummy processes snacks survive is simply part of the big picture!

The problem is that this experimental technology mechanically merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial, and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding. Not surprisingly, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights.

So, obviously, the million dollar question is “are GMOs safe?” Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe. In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or OUTRIGHT BANS on the production and sale of GMOs. In this country, however, the government has approved GMOs BASED ON STUDIES CONDUCTED BY THE SAME CORPORATIONS THAT CREATED THEM AND PROFIT FROM THEIR SALE!!! Thank goodness increasing numbers of Americans are taking matters into their own hands and choosing to opt out of the GMO “experiment.”

Enter the Non-GMO Project! The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization offering North America’s ONLY third party verification for products produced according to rigorous best practices for GMO avoidance. Polls consistently show that a significant majority of North Americans would like to be able to tell if the food they’re purchasing contains GMOs…The Non-GMO Project’s goal is to empower consumers to make change through the marketplace. If people stop buying GMOs, companies will stop using them and farmers will stop growing them. In this country GMOs can be found in as much as 80% of conventional processed food. 

So now that you’re an expert on GMOs (and will avoid them like the plague from this day forward, right???) I’m sure you’re wondering what the heck you CAN eat (safely, that is!) 

I HAVE GOOD NEWS! Every major world health organization (including the USDA) now agrees that we not only need somewhere in the neighborhood of 9-11 servings of vegetables and fruit every day, BUT THE MORE VEGETABLES AND FRUIT WE EAT ON A DAILY BASIS THE HEALTHIER WE WILL BE SO EAT UP AMERICA!!!

There’s still a hitch though: PESTICIDES! Don’t worry though…did you know that all the produce you buy at the grocery store does NOT need to be organic? STAY TUNED!!!
